AANCHAL IS ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS

I’m Aanchal Mohanty, a recent Johns Hopkins University graduate. I’m passionate about helping my clients achieve their goals and hopes in therapy.

I aim to build a safe and trusting relationship with individuals and couples so they feel sufficiently held and challenged while showing up for themselves in the therapeutic space. As a woman of color, I prioritize a decolonized and culturally sensitive approach in therapy that focuses on strengths.

Alongside victories and successes, we may experience multiple challenges throughout life. Facing challenges such as work stress, depression, anxiety, and relationship issues can be difficult.

Seeking therapy is a brave
step in self-improvement.

How do you describe yourself as a therapist?

My approach to therapy is to meet clients with respect and curiosity to build a synergetic relationship that acts as a vehicle to improve and optimize clients' quality of life.

I use an evidence-based, active style grounded in Relational Cultural Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment-based Therapy (ACT) to meet unique client needs.  I additionally use the Gottman Method for relational/couples work. I have experience working with a variety of mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, OCD, relational issues, and ADHD in adults.

Who do I primarily work with?

I primarily work with individual adults, couples (monogamous/poly/LGBTQIA+), polycules, and families. As a person of color (POC), I seek to create a safe and healing space for POC, especially those of Asian and South Asian descent.

Common Issues I work with:

  • Life/work transitions

  • Improving communication styles

  • Healing from infidelity, breakups, betrayal

  • Navigating non-monogamous relationships

  •  Improving sex/intimacy for individuals and couples

  • Challenges of being an Immigrant in the U.S/ Transitions between home/host cultural identities

  • Empty nest syndrome and life transitions in older adults (60+)

Methods I use

  • I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with clients in therapy. The client learns to accept their thoughts and feelings while committing to actions that align with their values. The counselor guides the client in developing psychological flexibility, mindfulness skills, and effective strategies to handle challenging emotions and situations. Through ACT, the client gains insight into their thought patterns, clarifies their values, and takes committed action towards creating a meaningful life. By observing their thoughts without judgment and focusing on values-driven behaviors, the client empowers themselves to live in the present moment, make choices aligned with their values, and build resilience to navigate life's challenges with greater clarity and purpose.

  • The Gottman Method is a therapeutic approach rooted in the research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, aimed at cultivating and sustaining healthy relationships. This method emphasizes key components such as building love maps to understand each other's inner worlds, nurturing fondness and admiration by expressing appreciation and respect, turning towards each other to respond to bids for connection, managing conflict through effective communication and resolution skills, making life dreams come true by supporting each other's goals and creating shared meaning through establishing shared rituals and values. By incorporating these elements into therapy, couples can strengthen their emotional connection, enhance intimacy, and effectively navigate challenges within their relationship, fostering a deeper and more fulfilling connection with one another.
